What is the Chinese Yuan?
The yuan, also knows as the 'kuai', is the base unit of a number of modern Chinese currencies, such as the Renminbi. A yuan is sub-divided into 10 jiao and one jiao is sub-divided into 10 fen. Japan and Korea share the same symbol with the yuan. In Chinese, the word yuan means "round object" or "round coin".
Understanding Chinese Currency
The Chinese yuan (CNY) was first introduced in 1889. Banknotes were issued in yuan denomination from the 1890s by private local banks as well as teh Imperial Bank of China. The Hu Pu Bank, established by the Imperial government also issued the currency. At first, the coins were issued as silver coins, later copper and brass coins were also circulated. After World War II the yuan suffered from hyperinflation and were replaced by gold yuan, worth 3 million old yuan, in 1948.
