What is the Egyptian Pound?
The currency of Egypt- the Egyptian Pound is divided into 100 piastre, or qirsh. Egypt currency was devalued up until 1962 when it pegged the Egyptian money to the US dollar. The pound floated in 1989, but is tightly managed by the Central Bank of Egypt.
Understanding Egyptian Currency
The National Bank of Egypt issued banknotes for the first time in 1899. Denominations of 50 piastres, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Egyptian Pounds. The Central Bank of Egypt took over for the National Bank and issued notes in 1961, of 25 and 50 piasters, 1, 5, 10 and 20 pound notes. Later 100 gineih, 50 pound in 200 pounds were introduced into circulation.
