What is the Mexican Peso?
The Mexican Peso is the currency of Mexico. Based on the 15th century Spanish dollar, it is the 12th most traded currency in the world and third most traded in the Americas. Subdivided into 100 centavos, the name was originally referenced to pesos oro--meaning gold weights.
Understanding Mexican Currency
Through the 1900s the Mexican currency was one of the most stable currencies in Latin America. After the oil crisis in the late 1970s the country suffered from severe inflation and devaluation of the Mexican peso. In 1993 the Bank of Mexico introduced a new currency called the 'nuevo peso'--meaning 'new peso'. Three years later they dropped the 'new' on coins and banknotes.
The Mexican economy enjoyed stability and investments--driving the currency to one of the most popular for trading in the world.
