Hong Kong Dollar

The Hong Kong dollar (HKD) was established in 1935, when Hong Kong took itself off of the silver standard and began to introduce the dollar as its primary form of currency. However, the dollar wasn’t officially the legal tender of Hong Kong until 1937. Hong Kong’s currency is currently handled by the government of Hong Kong, instead of by the Chinese government, which makes it notably different than Taiwan. Currently, three commercial banks are authorized to produce banknotes in Hong Kong: HSBC, BOCHK, and SCBHK.
