Understanding Vietnamese Money

In the mid-1900's, North and South Vietnam had separate currencies. The North Viet Minh government had their own currency, known as the 'dong', while South Vietnam used a currency known as the 'pastre'. After the fall of Saigon, the currency in the South was changed to the 'liberation dong', but upon reunification in 1978 of the North and South, the dong was also unified. In the late 1970's banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 dong were issued by the State Bank of Vietnam, until the mid-1980's, when other denominations were issued as inflation took hold.

The Vietnamese Dong (VND) has been Vietnam's national currency since May 3, 1978. The word 'dong' comes from the term "dong tien," literally meaning "money," referring to Chinese bronze coins used during the dynastic periods of Vietnam and China.
